Slovenia: parliament denies plea for referendum on same-sex unions
March 30, 2015
Lawmakers in Slovenia have rejected a citizens' petition for a nationwide referendum to test a new law granting legal recognition for same-sex unions.
After the Slovenian parliament approved an amendment to the country's marriage law earlier this month, opponents of the measure quickly collected 48,000 signatures on a petition calling for a referendum vote. But the legislators denied that request, voting 53 to 21 against the referendum.
The petition organizers are likely to appeal the decision to a constitutional court.
