Viet court affirms conviction of Catholic activists, sparking new protest

A Vietnamese appeals court has upheld the conviction of 8 Catholic activists who were charged with destruction of state property after protests on the site of a Redemptoris monastery in Hanoi. An estimated 5,000 Catholics joined a protest march after the appeals court delivered its decision. The activists' lawyer was unable to participate in the court hearing; his license had been revoked by state authorities on the eve of the appeal.
