Indulgences are a ‘hymn to liberty’

An indulgence is a “hymn to liberty” and a “recognition of the dignity of man,” the Vatican newspaper stated in an article on a five-day course taking place in Rome under the auspices of the Apostolic Penitentiary.

Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary, said that the “distinction between temporal punishment and guilt” safeguards human freedom.

“The persistence of temporal punishment, even after sacramental absolution of the sin, makes each man aware of the consequences of his own acts” and the duty of reparation, Cardinal Piacenza added.
