New Delhi church desecrated; 5th church vandalized since December

February 03, 2015

Vandals have desecrated a Catholic church in New Delhi, in the 5th such incident in recent weeks, prompting Catholics to appeal for a response from public officials.

Vandals struck at St. Alphonsa’s Church, opening the tabernacle and scattering the Blessed Sacrament around the building. A ciborium was found missing, prompting police to classify the incident as a robbery.

In January a delegation of Catholic bishops, led by Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal, met with Prime Minister Narendara Modi to appeal for his help in curbing attacks on India’s Christian minority. Catholic leaders in New Delhi lament that they have not seen a response to date.
