Vatican document critical of cosmetic surgery

A new Vatican document on women takes a critical look at cosmetic plastic surgery, the Crux web site reports.

The rising popularity of cosmetic surgery, the document says, may reflect an unhealthy attitude, “a refusal of the body.” The same attitude, the document suggests, may contribute to problems such as depression and eating disorders that affect women disproportionately.

The passage on cosmetic surgery is found in a document drafted by female consultants to the Pontifical Council for Culture, in preparation for a February meeting of that body which will be devoted to the role of women in the Church and in society.
