1.6 million have abandoned homes because of Boko Haram

January 23, 2015

An estimated 1.6 million Nigerians have fled their homes in the wake of the advance of the Islamist militant organization Boko Haram, according to the Associated Press.

Most have fled to other areas of Nigeria; UNICEF stated that 135,000 are now in neighboring Cameroon, Chad, or Niger.

In addition, more than 10,000 Cameroonians have fled their homes in recent days as Boko Haram advances there.

Boko Haram’s leader appeared in a video and took responsibility for slaughtering the residents of Baga, a Nigerian town that borders Chad.

“We killed the people of Baga,” said Abubakar Shekau boasted in the video. “We indeed killed them, as our Lord instructed us in his book … We will not stop. This is not much. You’ll see.”
