Scottish archbishop works to restore confidence after cardinal's forced resignation

January 14, 2015

A Scottish archbishop has acknowledged that he faces a “delicate” task in restoring confidence after the resignation of a cardinal charged with sexual misconduct.

“Time is a great healer,” Archbishop Leo Cushley of Edinburgh remarked in an interview with the Catholic News Agency. Having taken over the archdiocese after Cardinal Keith O’Brien resigned in disgrace in 2013, he said that many of the faithful are still feeling the pain of betrayal and “looking for answers.”

The archbishop said that the task of reconciliation has “been done I think discreetly; it’s got to be done quietly, it’s got to be done with great patience, and with great gentleness.”
