British agency says Catholic school could foster extremism; Church official protest

Church officials in Britain are protesting a decision by the government’s assessment agency to downgrade a Catholic school for failing to promote “British values.”
Ofsted—the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills—said after an inspection that St Benedict’s, a Catholic secondary school in Suffolk “requires improvement” in its work to help students appreciate different faiths and cultures. Ofsted had criticized a number of “faith schools,” most of them Islamic, for promoting attitudes that might foster intolerance or extremism.
The Catholic Education Service reacts strongly against the Ofsted judgment, saying that there was no evidence to support the notion that Catholic schools encourage attitudes at variance with tolerance and democratic principles.
