Chicago's mayor, city council honor Cardinal George

December 10, 2014

Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emanuel presented retired Cardinal Francis George with the Chicago Medal of Merit, the city’s highest honor, at a meeting of the city council on December 10.

Cardinal George was invited to give the invocation at the meeting. The members were given an opportunity to speak about the contributions made by the cardinal during his tenure in Chicago; then Cardinal George was given an opportunity to address the council.

Cardinal George, who retired in September at the age of 77, is battling cancer.
