2 million Iraqis have been displaced by Islamic State

December 10, 2014

Two million of Iraq’s 36 million people have fled their homes in the wake of the advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, according to a report in The Guardian.

Half of the refugees have made their way to Kurdistan, the autonomous northern Iraqi region that until recently had 8.3 million people.

“The current and most pressing challenge is the onset of winter,” said a British representative in Kurdistan. “We need to provide proper shelters, heating, winter clothing and blankets. We’re still receiving people … The crisis isn’t even stabilizing.”
