Irish bishops' statement affirms Christian meaning of marriage

December 03, 2014

In a statement entitled The Meaning of Marriage, the Catholic bishops of Ireland have warned that “to redefine the nature of marriage would be to undermine it as the fundamental building block of our society.”

Bishop Liam MacDaid, who chairs the Irish bishops’ committee on marriage and family, introduced the statement on December 3 at a press conference, accompanied by Bishop Kevin Doran of Elphin. They observed that the Synod of Bishops had encouraged the world’s bishops to spark conversations about the challenges facing families today and the ways in which the Church could respond.

“The primary concern of the Irish bishops, where marriage is concerned, is to encourage the thousand married couples, young and old, who are faithfully living the vocation of marriage, in what can sometimes be a very difficult environment (economically, culturally and spiritually),” said Bishop Doran. “Alongside this there is a particular concern to offer pastoral and spiritual support to couples who are facing particular challenges.”
