Ukrainian Catholic leader: ‘as long as we are on the side of good, we are invincible’

The head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the largest of the Eastern Catholic churches in full communion with the Holy See, recently marked the first anniversary of Euromaidan, the wave of protests that led to the removal of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych.

“The evil is defeated, although final victory of it will be revealed only at the end of the human history,” said Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk. “As long [as] we are on the side of good, we are invincible.”

“Hundreds of thousands of people came to witness the dignity of the human person, to show that the Ukrainians never put up with evil, falsehood, violence, corruption, the fact that someone is trying to steal our freedom, independence and our Ukrainian state,” he added. “We would like to recall how the Church became the core of love and respect.”

Subsequent events, he said, have shown that “our allies do not have the courage to fulfill” agreements guaranteeing Ukraine’s territorial integrity. “It turned out that the only immutable ally of Ukrainian people is our God. And He is faithful.”
