Cardinal Mahony to testify at sex-abuse trial

Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles was scheduled to testify in a Fresno, California courtroom on March 17 in a lawsuit involving alleged sexual abuse by Catholic priests. Although American prelates have frequently given depositions in such cases, a courtroom appearance is unusual; Cardinal Mahony has also once previously given testimony before a jury, in a case involving priests of the Stockton, California diocese that he once led. In that earlier case the cardinal said that he was not aware of the abuse allegations.
