Dutch woman rescues daughter from Islamic State

November 24, 2014

A Dutch Catholic woman has captured headlines by reporting that she had traveled into the Islamic State to rescue her teenage daughter, who had flown to Syria to marry an Islamic militant.

The woman, whose name was not disclosed, took action after her 19-year-old daughter fell in love with an Muslim militant with whom she had corresponded online, and—having converted to Islam—traveled to Syria to marry him. Soon thereafter the mother received a message that the relationship had gone awry and the young woman was in trouble. The mother flew to Turkey and, by her account, crossed the border into Syria to meet her daughter in Raqqa, the city now claimed as the capital of the Islamic State. (Dutch authorities say that they believe the meeting actually took place at the border.)

Returned to the Netherlands, the young woman now faces criminal charges for her involvement with the Islamic State.
