Pope should not wear cross when visiting Western Wall, rabbi says

March 17, 2009

The Israeli rabbi who supervises the Western Wall has said that Pope Benedict XVI should not wear his pectoral cross when he visits the site in May. Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch said that it is not appropriate for a Christian leader to wear a symbol of his faith at a site sacred to Jews. He remarked: "I feel the same way about a Jew putting on a tallit and phylacteries and going into a church." The rabbi has twice turned away delegations of Catholic bishops who refused to remove their pectoral crosses.
