Political infighting blocks response to Boko Haram, says Nigerian archbishop

November 18, 2014

A Catholic archbishop has lamented that the Nigerian government’s strategy to combat Boko Haram is “completely unreasonable” and has done nothing to stop the terrorist movement.

Speaking to a London conference on human rights, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Jos said that unfortunately he was not surprised by the latest news of terrorist attacks. He charged that political leaders are preoccupied with their own election campaigns and have not focused on the need to protect citizens from a mounting terrorist threat.

“It is time to leave behind inconsequential political interests and focus on the nation’s interests,” the archbishop said. He urged Nigerian politicians to “put aside their political squabbling for the time being and focus on strategies to deal with these perilous circumstances, because the entire population finds themselves in a situation where they either must flee the violence or live under circumstances where there is a complete lack of security.”
