Vatican message to Sikhs emphasizes compassion, service

November 18, 2014

The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue has issued a message to Sikhs in commemoration of the birth of Guru Nanak (1469-1539), the first of the Sikh gurus.

“The growing materialistic, consumerist and individualistic tendencies in today’s world, unfortunately, are making humans more and more self-centered, insensitive and indifferent to the needs and sufferings of others,” the message stated.

“As believers in our own respective religions with a shared treasury of values, may we, Christians and Sikhs, rediscover the importance of compassionate service in our personal and collective lives and make it a way of life,” continued the message, which was devoted to compassion and service.
