Indian court approves extradition of priest to face abuse charges in US

November 17, 2014

An Indian court has dismissed a priest’s plea, approves his extradition to the US to face charges of sexual abuse.

Father Joseph Palanivel Jeyapaul was charged with molesting a teenage girl while serving in the US in 2004. He had returned to India before a criminal charge was filed against him in 2006. But Archbishop Mylapore Chinnappa of Madras urged him to return to America to answer the charge.

In 2011 the US made a formal request for the priest’s extradition. Father Jeyapaul fought the request, but a trial court decided against him and an appeals court in Delhi has affirmed that result.
