Renewed call for CCHD donations

November 06, 2014

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is encouraging Catholics to donate to the upcoming national collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD).

Last year, the controversial anti-poverty program granted $12 million to 209 projects.

“In the United States, many Americans continue to face the effects of a stagnant economy, debilitating unemployment, a dehumanizing cycle of poverty, and growing civic disenfranchisement,” said Bishop Jaime Soto of Sacramento, who chairs the bishops’ Subcommittee on the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

“Families are choosing between food and rent and are worried about job security and low paychecks,” he added. “Poverty affects us all. Following the mandate of Jesus, CCHD creates opportunities for communion and solidarity that help us all, especially the most vulnerable. Through CCHD we foster the common good and work to build a society where no one is left behind.”

CCHD is in direct contradiction to Pope Benedict's "ON THE SERVICE OF CHARITY", which says "all the faithful have the right and duty to devote themselves personally to...offering our contemporaries not only material assistance, but also refreshment and care for their souls". Charitable activity must "exercise a valuable educational function within the Christian community", and Art. 7 § 2 speaks of "ensur[ing] an evangelical witness in the service of charity." Many grantees simply don't do this.

Not going to happen. I donate to and volunteer with organizations I know do not partner with others who exist in direct opposition to the basic teachings of the Catholic faith.

Every year independent reviews of CCHD grantees discloses that the USCCB does not have control over the staff running the campaign which has a long history of funding some organizations which oppose the teachings of the church and people are donating their money to charities that they trust.

For me the decision here is easy. There are many organizations who feed and clothe the poor and DON'T play politics of any variety; Food for the Poor comes immediately to mind.
