Vatican official denies dignity in suicide, commenting on Brittany Maynard death

November 04, 2014

Commenting on the highly publicized death of Brittany Maynard, the president of the Pontifical Academy for Life remarked that suicide is “an absurdity.”

"We don't judge people, but the gesture in itself is to be condemned," said Msgr. Ignacio Carrasco de Paula. He contested the claim that Maynard, who was suffering from terminal brain cancer, had died with dignity. “Dignity,” he said, “is something different from ending your own life.”

Your report isn't quite correct, CC.org. The Vatican official had said that an "ASSISTED suicide, in itself, is a reprehensible 'absurdity'," which was his response to the question about the "dignity" of assisted suicide. I am very happy to hear very clear response from the Holy See in regard to a potential new moral dilemma for the Christian faithful.

God rest her soul. I often felt this was, regrettably, the worst kind of narcissism. Her actions certainly lacked dignity. But calling it an absurdity without context is yet another poorly managed response by this priest in the Vatican. No wonder the Pope gas to correct comments all the time. It must drive him a little nuts.

I am particularly disturbed about the treatment this lady received, or more accurately, apparently failed to receive. I have read nothing about her having surgery to debulk the tumor, steroids to reduce swelling, or anticonvulsants to control seizures. These are palliative measures that help prolong the life of the patient, make them more comfortable, and help continue their functioning for the maximum time. This lady was complaining of head and neck pain and uncontrolled seizures.

I fully support the catholic position against suicide. However to use the word "absurdity" in this context at this moment is "cringe-worthy". How about instead offering the prayer of the Church for the young lady - and for all of suffering humanity particularly those whose only escape is thought to be suicide. This approach would hit the right notes without compromising doctrine. Pope Francis would be happy and correct!
