Theology must serve evangelization, says Cardinal Müller in talk at Catholic University

November 04, 2014

Theology must always serve the cause of evangelization, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith told an audience at Catholic University in a November 3 lecture.

Cardinal Gerhard Müller said that theologians must “not be content with desk-bound theology.” The pursuit of truth, for the theologian, is not merely an intellectual exercise, he said. It is done to help the faithful and to spread the faith.

The teaching office of the Church, the German cardinal continued, exists to provide a guarantee of fidelity to the truth, “professing the authentic faith free from error at all times and in diverse situations.”

The work of the theologian should be inspired by religious zeal, Cardinal Müller said. “Theology all arises from love and love’s dynamism, since love is ever desirous of better knowledge of the beloved.” He observed: “One cannot give the freedom of truth unless one has given oneself to the truth.”
