Vatican approves new statutes for Legionaries

November 03, 2014

The Vatican has approved a new set of statutes governing the Legion of Christ, completing a 3-year process of reform for the religious order.

The new statutes, containing 235 articles, replace earlier statutes that contained 802 articles. The new rules for the Legionaries are intended to maintain the character and discipline of the order while eliminating abuses that were identified after the founder, the late Father Marcial Maciel, was exposed as a fraud.

Father Benjamin Clariond, a spokesman for the Legionaries, told Vatican Radio that with the new statutes, the Vatican recognized a specific charism for the order, enabling the Legionaries to continue their work despit the scandal that had enveloped their founder.

You see, when you have a broken father in a family its usually the mother that brings the kids forward. That’s what happened to the Legonaries of Christ. We had a broken father and our mom, the Church, picked us up, got us together, set us straight and said, ok there’s a lot to do, keep on going.
