Italian cardinal says government should recognize workers' fears of unemployment

Clashes between police and striking workers should be “taken very seriously” by the Italian government, said Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, the president of the Italian bishops’ conference.

Cardinal Bagnasco said that violence in the city of Terni, where striking steelworkers confronted police, is a sign of “the concern and fear of so many people to lose their jobs and therefore to have the dignified survival of their families thrown into crisis.” These tensions have grown as Italy’s economy has foundered, he said.
