Vatican cardinals receive discounts on groceries, gas, cigarettes

October 13, 2014

A report on Vatican financial affairs has shown that cardinals serving at the Vatican receive discounts on groceries, gasoline, and cigarettes, among other benefits.

In a letter to Cardinal George Pell, the new Secretary for the Economy, an official of the Vatican Governorate reported that the cardinals enjoy a 15% discount at the Vatican supermarket and a 20% discount on cigarettes. The report showed that the Vatican purchased 500 packages of cigarettes a month.

The Italian daily La Repubblica, which obtained a copy of the account, said that some cardinals give away the cigarettes they purchase. Other prelates said that they had never used the discounts.
