Missouri bishop opposes expansion of gay-rights protection

October 06, 2014

Bishop James Johnston of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, Missouri, has issued a statement against a proposed Springfield city ordinance that would expand the existing non-discrimination law to bar discrimination because of sexual preference.

Bishop Johnston said that the measure would infringe on religious freedom, requiring Christians to act on the basis of a “secular doctrine” that homosexual conduct is acceptable. "Does the government have a compelling interest in forcing every member of our society to participate in the celebration of same-sex relationships?" the bishop asked.

If the city council approves the measure, the bishop said: “In the name of preventing discrimination against some, they would impose it on others.”

Legislating morality is something that federal, state and local governments are doing to show how good they are. The Supreme Court, today, showed how they look the other way, thereby giving their assent. Some kind of governments we have - morally absent.
