Vietnam releases Catholic activist after 3-year prison term

October 03, 2014

The government of Vietnam has released a Catholic activist who had spent three years in jail after being convicted of “propaganda against the state.”

Antonie Dau Van Duong was repeatedly beaten and abused during his confinement, and his Bible was confiscated as jailers sought to break his spirit, the AsiaNews service reports. “I’m lucky to be alive,” he said upon his release. The 26-yer-old activist vowed to continue working for human rights.
