Papal tribute to United Bible Societies

September 30, 2014

Pope Francis has paid tribute to the United Bible Societies upon the completion of an ecumenical Italian translation of Sacred Scripture.

“It is my wish that all Christians be able to get to know ‘Jesus Christ’s sublime science’ through the reading of the Word of God, because the sacred text is the nutrient of the soul and the pure and eternal source of our spiritual life,” the Pope said on September 29. “So we must make every effort so that each believer may read God’s Word, because, as Saint Jerome says, ‘Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.’”

The UBS website's figures show that of 491 translations, 72% of them appear to be from the KJV. Only 28% of their translations include the Deuterocanonicals, and then only as a "sub-category," whatever that means. This hardly supports the Pope's gushing characterization of them as having "the fruit of . . . competency . . .and faith. . . ." The question is, if Scripture truly is "sacred text ," is it permissable to refuse to provide it in its entirety 72% of the time?

As we know from the United Bible Societies website, their ecumenical translation is defined as: "Our translation policy ensures we have translation guidelines that are acceptable to the Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox Churches." How is it possible to reconcile such different interpretation as one and same TRUTH? If ‘Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.’ - which Scripture our Catholic Church truly supports?
