Pope prays for Ebola victims, health-care workers fighting epidemic

September 23, 2014

Pope Francis offered his prayers for the victims of the Ebola epidemic and for the health-care workers fighting the disease as he met on September 23 with visiting bishops from Ghana.

“I pray for the repose of the souls of all who have died in this epidemic, among whom are priests, men and women religious and healthcare workers who contracted this terrible disease while caring for those suffering,” the Pope said in his message to the visiting bishops from the west African nation. He remarked that the epidemic heightens the importance of the Church’s contributions to health care.

The Pope also encouraged the bishops of Ghana, who were making their ad limina visits, to take special care in the training and continued formation of their priests and to ensure that the material resources of the Church are "administered with honesty and responsibility, in order to provide good witness, especially where corruption has hindered the just advancement of society."
