Pakistani Catholic group protests resumption of capital punishment

September 17, 2014

The Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic bishops of Pakistan is arguing strenuously against the resumption of capital punishment, saying that the move would “bring Pakistan back in time,” the Fides news service reports.

The commission protested the scheduled execution of Shoaib Sarwar, who was sentenced in 1998 on murder charges. The execution, set for September 18, would be the first execution of a civilian in Pakistan in six years.
