Scottish bishops oppose 'opt-out' system for presumed consent to organ donation

September 17, 2014

The Catholic bishops of Scotland have objected to proposed legislation that would establish a presumption of consent for organ donation.

Although claiming that the Catholic Church is “an enthusiastic supporter of organ donation,” the Catholic bishops’ office said that an “opt-out” system would eliminate the “important principle of consent.”

“The present system recognizes the importance of genuine consent in the treatment of persons and the charitable nature of organ donation which is based on a gratuitous act of kindness on behalf of the donor,“ the statement continues. The bishops add that family members should play a role in the decision to donate organs.
