4 sainthood causes advance

September 17, 2014

In a September 17 audience with the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Pope Francis cleared the way for the canonization of an Indian priest and an Italian religious sister and the beatification of an Italian bishop and Canadian religious sister.

The Pope approved the publication of a decree on a miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Maria Cristina Brando (1856-1906) and “approved the favorable vote” of the Congregation’s cardinals and bishops in favor of the canonization of Blessed Joseph Vaz (1651-1711), an Indian Oratorian priest who ministered in Sri Lanka.

Blessed Vaz was beatified during St. John Paul II’s 1995 apostolic journey to Sri Lanka, and Pope Francis’s decision clears the way for the possibility of the priest’s canonization during the Pope’s apostolic journey to Sri Lanka in January.

In addition, Pope Francis approved the publication of decrees on miracles attributed to the intercession of Venerable Archbishop Pio Alberto del Corona, OP (1837-1912) and Venerable Élisabeth Turgeon (1840-1881).
