Bishop: over 2,500 Catholics slain by Boko Haram

September 16, 2014

The bishop of Maidiguri, a city in northeastern Nigeria, said that the militant Islamist organization Boko Haram has murdered over 2,500 Catholics in his diocese.

Bishop Oliver Doeme is among the thousands of Catholics who have taken refuge in Yola, a city 250 miles away from Maidiguri. He said that “many families do not know the whereabouts of their breadwinners,” that “quite a number of parents are still searching for their missing children and their loved ones,” and that “soldiers are running away from insurgents for the fear of being killed,” according to a summary of his comments in a leading Nigerian newspaper.
