Curial decree on feast days of St. John XXIII, St. John Paul II

September 12, 2014

Pope Francis has decided that the feast days of Pope St. John XXIII (October 11) and Pope St. John Paul II (October 22) will be observed as optional memorials on the liturgical calendar, according to a decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Eighty popes are canonized saints, but fewer than a quarter are commemorated with obligatory or optional memorials.

The decree, dated May 29, was published in the September 12 edition of L’Osservatore Romano.
