French court dismisses charges for topless demonstration in Notre Dame

September 11, 2014

A French court has dismissed a criminal complaint against members of the radical feminist group Femen, who had staged a topless protest in the sanctuary of Notre Dame cathedral.

The court ruled that there was no evidence of damage to the cathedral after the Femen protest. Instead, the court imposed fines on the ushers who had removed the women from the cathedral, saying that they had used undue force.

A lawyer for the cathedral’s administration said that Notre Dame would appeal the ruling. The cathedral, he said, “is a place that is open to all, but must be respected by all.”

And thus emboldened, Femen planned its next appearance at Paris's largest mosque to protest Moslem treatment of women. Now there's a headline you'll never see.

I challenge Femen to do the same protest at the Grand Mosque of Paris and see how forcibly they will be removed; and I wonder if there is any French judge brave enough to tell the Islamic community of Paris that they will have to put up with these protests regularly since there will be no fines and no law enforcement of any kind if no physical damage is done to the mosque.
