Islamic State's 'war of religion' must be countered, says authoritative Jesuit journal

September 05, 2014

An editorial in the Italian Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica has characterized the aggression of the Islamic State as “a war of religion and of annihilation.”

The editorial argues that a military response to the Islamic State is necessary. Although the magazine says that the Church does not endorse any particular military tactics, the editorial says that “the existing military solution is not effective.”

La Civilta Cattolica also says that the world’s Islamic leaders have “a duty to destroy in the heart of all Muslims an extremist conception of the conception of the Qu’ran and of Islamic tradition.”

Editorials in La Civilta Cattolica are generally interpreted as semi-official statements of Vatican policy, since they are cleared in advance by the Secretariat of State.

The concept of jihad being at the heart of the Koran, just how are any Muslim "authorities" supposed to extirpate it from the heart of Muslims? The problem here is that the so-called "extremists" Mohammedans, those in IS and al-Qaeda for instance, in fact understand their religion's teachings far better than many Western observers, including those who work at La Civilta Cattolica.

Since there is no central authority for Islam, there are thousands of imans, each with their own brand of Islam. Then you have the state of Saudi Arabia and Iran, for example, where religion conforms to the state and not vice-versa. Of course, both countries are sponsoring different elements in the Mid-East, too. So what are you going to do?
