Israeli President Peres to meet with Pope on Thursday

Catholic World News - September 02, 2014

Israeli President Shimon Peres will meet with Pope Francis on September 4, the Vatican has announced.

The visit comes at a time of mounting tension in the Middle East. Israel's military intervention into Gaza to counter attacks by Hamas, followed by the seizure of a large tract of West Bank land for a new Jewish settlement, have dampened hopes for new progress toward a peace accord.

The last meeting between the Pontiff and the Israeli leader came in June, when the Pope invited Peres, along with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, to join in a prayer service for peace.
