Pope's special Iraq envoy heads next for Washington

August 26, 2014

Cardinal Fernando Filoni, who visited Iraq earlier this month as the Pope’s special envoy to persecuted Christians there, will next travel to Washington, DC, to confer with the patriarchs of the Eastern Catholic churches.

Cardinal Filoni and the Eastern prelates will “seek to involve the American bishops and so influence public opinion” to work for an end to persecution in Iraq, said Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, the Vatican’s representative at UN offices in Geneva.
