Liberal Catholic scholars back Sebelius for Obama Cabinet

March 04, 2009

President Barack Obama has now chosen two Catholic politicians with strongly pro-abortion public records to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services, notes papal biographer George Weigel in a First Things essay. While the President's first choice, former Senator Tom Daschle, withdrew because of tax problems, the new nominee, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, has "what some would consider a public record even more disturbing than Tom Daschle’s," Weigel notes. The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) blasted a group of liberal Catholic scholars who proclaimed their support for the Sebelius nomination. “These professors are giving comfort and aid to those whose stated goals are to advance policies directly opposed to Catholic teachings on life issues, and they do it under the guise of fidelity to Jesus Christ,” said CNS President Patrick Reilly. The scholars signing the pro-Sebelius statement included Lisa Sowle Cahill and Rev. David Hollenbach, SJ of Boston College, Delores Leckey and Rev. Thomas Reese, SJ of Georgetown, and David O'Brien of Holy Cross.
