Pope to meet with abuse victims from Ireland, other nations

June 26, 2014

Pope Francis will meet with Irish victims of sexual abuse at the Vatican this weekend, the Irish Catholic newspaper has reported.

The encounter will be the first formal meeting by Pope Francis with abuse victims since his election to the pontificate. It will also be the first opportunity for Irish victims to meet with a Roman Pontiff. Pope Benedict XVI held several sessions with abuse victims.

The Irish group will apparently meet with the Pope along with abuse victims from other countries, as the Vatican hosts a session of the newly appointed papal commission for the protection of minors.
