Torture is a mortal sin, Pope Francis emphasizes

June 23, 2014

Following his June 22 Angelus address, Pope Francis told the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square that the United Nations commemorates June 26 as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

“I reaffirm the firm condemnation of all forms of torture, and I invite Christians to commit themselves to work together for its abolition and to support victims and their families,” he said.

The Pope added, “To torture someone is a mortal sin! A very grave sin!”
