Central African Republic: leading prelate aids Muslim refugees
June 13, 2014
Archbishop Dieudonné Nzapalainga, the Central African Republic’s leading prelate, traveled into the dangerous interior to the nation to bring aid to 600 Muslim refugees, according to a report in La Croix.
Islamist Séléka militias overthrew the nation’s president in March 2013, attacked Christian institutions, and held sway until January 2014. Anti-balaka forces, originally organized in self defense, have engaged in widespread revenge attacks upon Muslims. Church leaders have denounced violence on both sides.
“The flight of the Muslims from Central Africa is a serious problem,” said Archbishop Nzapalainga. Practical aid, he said, is necessary to prevent the Muslim victims of violence from equating Christians with those who have done evil to them.
