Italian bishops' leader raps secessionist movement

The president of the Italian bishops’ conference called for national unity and condemned violence after the arrest of 24 secessionists on terrorism and subversion charges.
Italian police said that those arrested were members of a group that had formed around Venice to lead the region out of Italy. Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, commenting after the arrests, said that decentralization of government should be pursued in a spirit of cooperation and especially non-violence. “We must consider the unity of the country,” he said.
