New Haitian cardinal brokers agreement to allow for elections
March 18, 2014
Cardinal Chibly Langlois, who became the Haiti’s first cardinal in February, has brokered an agreement between the nation’s president and opposition forces that will allow for legislative elections in October, the Fides news agency reported.
President Michel Martelly had delayed elections for two years, and progress towards an agreement that would have permitted elections had stalled.
“Dialogue has allowed us to grow as a country, we came out stronger; there are no losers in the dialogue, there are only winners,” said Cardinal Langlois.
