Priest, human-rights worker arrested in Sri Lanka

March 17, 2014

A Catholic priest and a human-rights activist were arrested in Sri Lanka after they inquired about a Tamil woman who is in police custody, the AsiaNews service reports.

Father Praveen, the director of the Center for Peace and Reconciliation in Jaffna, was reportedly arrested along with Ruki Fernando, an adviser to that institution. Police denied holding the two, but associates confirmed that they had been detained by anti-terrorist police.
