Father Damien among 10 scheduled for canonization in fall ceremonies

Pope Benedict XVI has approved the canonization of Father Damien of Molokai, along with 9 others. At a consistory on February 21, the Pontiff approved a decree for the canonization of Blessed Jozef Damien de Veuster, the Beligan missionary who won renown for his care of lepers on the Hawaiian island colony. The Holy Father will preside at the canonization ceremony on October 11. At the same February 21 consistory, the Pope also approved plans to canonize:

  1. Blessed Rafael Arnaiz Baron (1911-1938), a Spanish Cistercian. His canonization will take place along with that of Father Damian and 4 others on October 11.
  2. Blessed Francesc Coll y Guitart (1812-1875), a Spanish Dominican priest, also to be canonized on October 11.
  3. Blessed Gertrude (Caterian) Comensoli (1847-1903), an Italian religious, who will be one of 5 new saints canonized on September 26.
  4. Blessed Zygmunt Szczesny Felinski (1822- 1895), a Polish bishop, also to be canonized on October 11.
  5. Blessed Mary of the Cross (Jeanne) Jugan (1792-1879), a French religious, also to be canonized on October 11.
  6. Blessed Arcangelo Tadini (1846-1912), an Italian priest, also to be canonized on September 26.
  7. Blessed Nuno di Santa Maria Alvares Pereira (1360-1431), a Portuguese religious, also to be canonized on September 26.
  8. Blessed Bernardo Tolomei (1272-1348), an Italian Benedictine, also to be canonized on September 26.
  9. Blessed Caterina Volpicelli (1839-1894), an Italian religious, also to be canonized on September 26.
