Vatican conference issues call for immediate ceasefire in Syria

Participants in a Vatican-sponsored conference on Syria have called for an immediate ceasefire there.

The conference—headed by Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue— said that the approaching Geneva peace conference should take the step of imposing an immediate ceasefire, as the first step toward resolving Syria’s problems. The conference also expressed concern for the Syrian refugees who “suffer extreme and potentially deadly deprivations in terms of food, healthcare, electricity, telecommunications, transport and other basic human needs.”
