Spanish ruling party faces internal opposition on pro-life measure

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is facing opposition within his own Popular Party (PP) over proposed legislation that would restore restrictions on legal abortion.
Celia Villalobos, the deputy speaker of the Spanish parliament, called for a free vote on the abortion bill, dissenting from the PP strategy that would expect party members to support the legislation. Liberal politicians have voiced their outrage over the bill, but it is expected to gain parliamentary approval.
The “rights of the unborn and of pregnant women” bill would overturn the legislation adopted under the Socialist government, and make abortion illegal except in cases of rape or a certified threat to the mother’s life. The PP gained an electoral victory in 2011 after promising, among other things, to restore the pro-life legislation that the opposition Socialists had enacted.
