Church official sees war of ‘all against all’ in Syria

November 12, 2013

The director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Lebanon has told the Fides news agency that growing divisions among Syrian rebel factions have led to a war of “all against all.”

“Where will it take us?” asked Father Paul Karam. “Is this the Arab Spring? Hatred, fanaticism, terrorism increases. Who pays for all this? Only the exhausted Syrian population and, within society, the minorities who are the most vulnerable of all.”

“It is necessary to promote a true path of peace that does not take the form of a plan for the division of the country,” he added. “An international peace conference is needed in order to address the Syrian crisis in a genuine, practical and effective way, following the compass of human rights and religious freedom.”

This was obviously going to happen. The fact that the administration thought otherwise reflects that they know so little about the region and have helped to make matters worse by supplying various factions. Nice going.
