Autopsy shows Eluana Englaro died of deliberate dehydration; Berlusconi says she was killed
February 11, 2009
Italian authorities have announced that preliminary results of an autopsy show that Eluana Englaro died of dehydration after her feeding tube was removed in accordance with a court order. Although toxicology results were not yet available, the early report contradicted suggestions that the comatose woman might have been given sedatives to hasten her death. Nevertheless, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi rejected the notion that Englaro had died of natural causes after she was deprived of food and water. "Eluana did not die a natural death," he said. "She was killed."
