Australian doctor faces disciplinary action for refusing to do sex-selection abortion
October 10, 2013
An Australian doctor may lose his medical license for refusing to perform a sex-selection abortion.
Dr. Mark Hobart declined to perform an abortion on a healthy young woman, 19 weeks pregnant, who was disappointed to learn that the baby was a girl. The doctor also refused to refer the couple to another doctor who would perform the abortion.
Dr. Hobart is now being investigated by the Australian medical board. Under the law in Victoria doctors are allowed to decline abortions only if they will find another doctor to do the procedure.
